Hygint
as a brand & logo comes from Greek myth
It all
started with Asclepius. According to Greek myth, he was the son
of the God Apollo and the woman Coronis. When Apollo found out
that Coronis had been unfaithful (even while carrying his
child), he sent his twin sister Artemis to kill her.
However as
Coronis was burning on her funeral pyre, Apollo took pity on his
unborn son and snatched Asclepius from her womb. He then sent
his son to the wise centaur Cheiron who taught him the art of
healing.
Asclepius
learnt all about surgery, the use of drugs, love potions and
incantations. Some myths tell us that he discovered medicine by
watching as one snake used herbs to bring another snake back to
life.
Asclepius
became so skilled that he was even able to bring the dead back
to life, thus challenging the power of the Gods. Furious at him,
the Great God Zeus sent down a thunderbolt to kill him
instantly.
Realizing
that Asclepius had done a lot of good for mankind, Zeus now made
him into a god by transforming him into the constellation
Ophiuchus (the snake-bearer) to shine among the stars for ever.
Asclepius
had six daughters, among them the beautiful Hygeia. She is
usually symbolized by the snake and the medicine bowl together.
Under Hygeia’s power, the venom of the snake is transformed into
powerful medicine to be used in the bowl. This is how we came to
have the symbol of the snake and bowl for modern pharmacies
today.
Snakes have
always fascinated people, and they have been used for worship,
magic potions and medicine. At the same time, they became the
symbol of love, health, disease, medicine and even wisdom.
Asclepius
and Hygeia became powerful figures symbolizing the strength and
